In his Book "How to Play Your Best Golf all the Time", published in 1954, the great Tommy Armour wrote:

"I am definately of the opinion that there is bound to be growing and
well-warranted popularity
of 5, 6 and 7 woods among the vast majority of golfers"

How right he was. Fairway woods are easier to hit than long and medium irons for most club golfers.

Comparison of 3-Wood SizesFairway Woods today are bigger, more powerful and longer from the grass or the tee. Making the right choice of fairway woods means looking at what your requirements are and what kind of distance gaps you're trying to fill.

Need a fairway wood that flies 220 yards and stops on a dime? Maybe a driver replacement for tight driving holes. Maybe it's a question of holding that 200 yard Par 3. Knowing what you need is key to when it comes to choosing fairway woods.

Size increases have also made modern Faiway Woods much more forgiving than their Persimmon counterparts of 20 odd years ago. Fairway Woods today are about the same size as Drivers used to be back in the day.

Fairway Woods have a much bigger premium on accuracy. On most of the driving holes at my club, I can be almost 20 yards from the middle of the fairway with my driver and still have a shot.

20 yards from the pin though with my second to a Par 4 or a reachable Par 5, and at most holes I'll be reaching for a sand wedge instead of the putter.

As with drivers, Fairway Woods come in all shapes and sizes from classically shaped clubs like the Dynacraft ICT or Acer XP to square offerings like the Acer Mantara or Power Play System Q2 to triangular woods like the Power Play Caiman and Acer XK.

Some have shallow faces that make them more appealing to hit from the fairway while others have deeper faces, inspiring confidence from the tee.

Best advice here would be to follow your driver characteristics when it comes to choosing fairway woods. Confident with a square driver, go with square woods, Getting better results from your pear dropped driver, stick to a more traditional looking fairway wood.

Get consistent with shafts as well. Use the same or similar shaft in your fairway woods as the one you use in your driver. You don't necessarily have to get the same series driver and woods. All our fairway woods can be customized with your shaft of choice. More consistency in feel from club to club leads to more consistent shots and ultimately lower scores.

Most manufacturers offer a good selection of lofts so when you find a shape you're comfortable with you can be sure to the right lofts will be on offer to fill all the distance gaps needed.

All our Fairway Woods come custom assembled with the shaft and grip of your choice so take the time to have a look at our shaft and grip fitting guides.

Fairway Woods Essentials

  • Flight & Forgiveness: Looking for a mid/low ball flight from your fairway woods - try clubs with more traditional profiles and shallower faces. Looking for more forgiveness, try a fairway wood with a square or triangular profile, with more of the weight moved back to the perimeter for increased MOI.
  • Custom Shafts: If you thought custom shafts were only for Drivers, think again. All our fairway woods can be custom built with your shaft of choice. Most shaft manufacturers offer a range of weight options for driver and wood shafts.
  • Variable Crown Technology – VCT: Fairway woods are smaller in volume than drivers so maximizing the MOI (Moment of Inertia) isn't quite as simple as moving weight. VCT takes weight from spots where it isn't needed and redistributes this to the perimeter of the club, increasing the MOI and the forgiveness.
  • Lofts: Despite the increase in popularity of Hybrids, many golfers, beginners and ladies especially, prefer the confidence inspiring larger fairway woods. High lofted fairway woods (5, 7, 9) can improve ball contact and are very turf-friendly for a variety of lies in the fairway or light rough.
