Custom Putter Trends

If you're in the market for a new putter, then this season's offerings are sure to have something to appeal. Custom putters now come in a huge range of shapes, sizes and materials.

Putters that look great, give you a ton of feed-back on strokes and can even be adjusted to suit your particular requirements. Check our Custom Putters Essentials for a look at the design elements of our custom putters.

As with any piece of golf equipment, take a look at your putter stroke before deciding on a new putter style.

If you tend to swing around your body then a more compact heel-toe weighted putter style will probably work best for you. If you use a more straight-back-and-through style of stroke, then you might want to consider a larger mallet style, face balanced putter.

Are you piling on the 3-putts from leaving your long putts short? Heavier custom putters could be the solution to that one. Leaving long putts short had always been a weak point with my game. I switched to the mallet style Acer CB2 and although I'm still not as good a putter as Paul, my 3-putt stats are getting way better. The percentage of putts I make in the 6-10 foot range has also improved.

Custom putters with milled faces are the choice for the golfer who wants a better roll on putts. These milled face custom putters get the ball rolling faster and cut down on the amount of skid on the ball. More roll, less skid, usually equals more putts made. From putters like the Acer MC4, the ball starts rolling as soon as it leaves the face. No more skid which translates to increased accuracy.

After a recent rules change by the game's governing bodies, a putter's face no longer needs to be wider than the front to back measurement. This has given us custom putters with high MOI designs as manufacturers strive to move weight to the extreme perimeter of their putter designs.

Higher MOI translates to a more forgiving, stable putter. Some of these new custom putters might look a bit outlandish, but anything that works is good as far as we're concerned.

Putting is the most personal, frustrating and mind-boggling part of our great game. If you have any doubt about the value of a solid putting stroke, see how the pros effortlessly smack a drive nine million miles, then sweat their guts out over a 3 foot putt. They know where the checks come from.

How many Majors would somebody like Sergio Garcia have under his belt if only he could putt? I can think of 4 at least where bad putting ruined his chances. Hitting the green in two on a long Par 5 is great, but it kind of spoils things when he 4-putts from 30 feet as he did at Bethpage in the 2009 US Open.

Great guns to A.E. Yang for winning the 2009 US PGA in some style, but if Tiger had made his usual quota of 10-12 footers, it might well have been Wanamaker No. 5 for a certain Mr. Woods.

Master the short stick and you'll be a difficult golfer to beat.

Custom Putter Essentials

  • CNC Milled: A putter head manufactured on a Computer Controlled milling machine. Tolerances are higher using this type of process and CMC milled putter faces get the ball rolling sooner after the stroke, reducing unwanted ball skid.
  • Face Balanced: Try this simple test. Lay your putter on a table-top with the head hanging over the edge. If your putter balances with the face parallel to the table-top, it's face balanced. Face Balanced putters work better for golfers with a straight-back-and-through putting stroke.
  • Face Inserts: Many of our custom putter come with face inserts. These are usually made of a softer material then the rest of the putter face for a more responsive strike.
  • Moveable Weights: Inevitably, moveable weight technology has made its way into the world of custom putters. Changing the weights, changes the overall balance and also the feel of the putter. If you play a lot of different courses, the ability to switch from a heavier to a lighter feeling putter should be a benefit.
  • Plumber's Neck: Common name for the style of custom putters where the shaft goes into the extended hosel, rather than into the putter head itself.
