Custom Iron Trends
What irons you choose to put in your bag is perhaps the most important decision you'll make when
it comes to equipment for the new season. Frustratingly so, it's also the easiest to get wrong.

The number of designs and customization factors for your new set of custom irons can get a bit
overwhelming. Check our Custom Irons Essentials for a look at the design
elements of a modern iron set.
The market for golf irons used to be cut and dried. Choices were pretty much between Blades and
Game Improvement Cavity Backs. Depending on your skill levels you went for a set of Blades or Cavity Backs.
At the players end of the equation, pure muscle back blades have all but disappeared. Even the
top Pros are getting some help from their iron designs. At the opposite end of the equation, super game improvement
irons boast bigger cavities and wider soles, making for a much more forgiving set of irons.
It used to be Forged for good players, Cast for average. Not anymore. Iron design nowadays
overlaps. How about Players Cast Cavity Backs like the Acer XK
Pros, or forgiving Forged Cavity Backs like the Dynacraft
Prophet CNC or Super Game Improvement irons like the Power Play System Q2 or the amazing Acer XK Ti. There really is a set of custom irons for players of all skill
levels.
Growing up I used a set of forged blades, from 1-Iron down and consequently
my iron play became pretty good. Now playing a set of Acer XP Pro's with Dynamic Gold steel shafts in Stiff,
Standard Length, 1o Upright. Using from 4-Iron through PW, having ditched the 3-Iron in favor of a
Hybrid Club.
My current clubs are easier to hit than my old blades, longer, more consistent, more
forgiving, plus I can still work them when needed. Need I go on? The differences in the club designs are pretty
obvious as you can see from the comparison image of my old and current 7-Irons. I'm all for
keeping things simple, and in this case my game is better from using a cavity back. Simple.
Workability is a big part of custom irons. Bias things too far towards a forgiving set of irons,
and you take away some of the shot shaping potential. Stick to a more workable set though, and off-center hits will
be punished far more.
"Feel" is also associated with forged irons. You can feel a well struck shot with a forged iron
that much better. Perhaps more importantly, you can feel a badly struck shot far more. That "feel" on a bad shot is
what gives you the necessary feed-back to know what you're doing wrong.
One thing's for sure though. Our Custom Irons won't let you down in the "Feel" department,
Forged or Cast.
Custom Iron Essentials
-
Set Makeup: With the growing popularity of Hybrids, the conventional iron set is more
or less gone for good, particularly in the game improvement segments. Most iron sets now start at the
4-iron, as manufacturers realise the longer irons are being replaced with easy hitting hybrids. With
our custom irons you can pretty much start (and end) where you feel most comfortable. The choice is
yours.
-
Progressive Designs: Iron sets today are designed to be slightly different from club
to club. Each iron in your set will have been designed to have different COG's, MOI or sole widths, to
get the best from each individual iron.
