US Open Winners. From the first United States Open in 1895 to the
current US Open Champion. All the Winners of the United States Open.
First played in 1895,
the US Open is the second oldest of the 4 Majors in Men's Golf.
The United States Open Championship, commonly known as the U.S.
Open, is the annual open golf tournament of the United States. It is the second of the four major championships in
golf and is on the official schedule of both the PGA Tour and the European Tour.
The US Open is staged by the USGA in mid-June, and, barring rain
delays, the final round is played on the third Sunday of the month, which is Father's Day.
To date, only one man has ever won 3 US Opens in a row, Willie Anderson, who
won a total of 4 championships. His run of three-in-a-row come at the 1903, 1904 and 1905 US Opens.
The U.S. Open is the only one of the four major championships
which does not go immediately to a playoff if two or more players are tied at the end of the four rounds. Instead,
players tied after 72 holes, play a fifth 18-hole playoff the following day (Monday).
If the championship is still tied after the 18-hole playoff, a
sudden death playoff is held. Only three times in the history of the event has the sudden death playoff decided the
champion.
The last time it came down to a sudden death playoff was
in 2008 when Tiger Woods defeated Rocco Mediate at the first playoff hole after tying for the lead with an
improbable par at the last hole of regulation play, the pair still tied after the 18 hole playoff.
Originally played over 36 holes, the US Open became a 72 hole
event in 1898.
Known for being played on long courses with punishing rough, the
US Open is invariably won with numbers not far from level Par with many wins coming in at over Par for the four
rounds.
