The 500 series from Bionik all feature TPU inserts in the face. For some quick
"back to chemistry 101" TPU stands for Thermoplastic Polyurethane. Think of it as a kind of
designer rubber and you won't be far wrong.
The bit about TPU that interests us is the way in which it can be messed around
with to create a compound which is very stretchy, very tough and very, very uniform.
In fact, pretty much a perfect solution for a putter insert.
Ok, so we've got hollow woods, irons and wedges. How about hollow putters?
Enter the Bionik 505 Custom Putter. Full mallet design with a very
forgiving hollow body. Overall weight is increased which makes very good sense. Light weight and
hollow would be a very unresponsive putter. The extra weight really works.
There's a lot of discussion going on about heavier putters. Personally I prefer
a heavier head as it solves my main problem which is decelerating the putter, particularly on long
putts.
If you tend to grab your putter on the downswing, then playing a heavier
club will get you accelerating through the ball that much better.
The 505 gets it pretty much right on. Heavy enough to get a nice smooth putting
stroke, but not too heavy to make it unplayable on fast greens.
Nice alignment aids on this putter with a topline dot and contrasting background
on the wing that frames the ball very comfortably at address.
As with the other models in the 500 series, the 505 has a TPU face insert that
cuts down on unwanted skid and really gets the ball rolling to the hole.
