British Open Winners. From the first British Open in 1860 to the current Open Champion.
All the Winners of the British Open.
First played in 1860, the British Open is the oldest of the 4 Majors in Men's Golf.
From it's beginning and until 1891, The Open was played over 36 holes, the prize for first place
in the first eleven tournaments being a leather belt.
It wasn't until 1872 that the prize for winning The
Open became the now famous Claret Jug, after Tom Morris Junior "Young Tom Morris" had won the belt
outright with 3 consecutive victories between 1868 and 1870.
Young Tom went on to win a total of four Championships.
The record for most victories is six, held by Harry Vardon, who won his Opens between 1896 and
1914.
Until 1872 The Open was only played at Prestwick. Since then the championship has rotated
amongst most of the great links courses in Great Britain.
